Making a statement like this “laws produce culture” can be
eye opening. Let me begin by proving the point this way. When a person or group that
is living counter to the rest of culture; what do they do to change the culture
to allow them or their behavior to become the norm? They attempt to change the
laws of the nation first. Law regulates behavior, which creates a set of norms of
what is accepted behavior within that society. Those behavior norms then become
what we call “culture.”
American culture historically has been a lover of life and
thus sought all means to preserve life. In other words, America has not always
been an abortion mill. In 2008, approximately 1.21 million abortions took place
in the U.S. Culturally at one time in our history this was not the accepted norm. Today, however, we hardly blink an eye at these astronomical figures on
murder. What happened to change our culture? The pro-abortionists realized that
marching through the streets and writing papers to support their position was
not enough to change the culture of this country. They knew they had to change
the law before the culture could be changed into being a society that would be
accepting to this heinous activity. In 1973, they did just that in Roe vs.
Wade.
Our American culture
has always frowned on same-sex relationships. To change the culture, what are
they (homosexuals) doing? They are attempting to change the laws, so they can
change the culture.
This is why elections
are so important. Beyond all the hoopla of the political conventions lies an
important issue that will affect us all - the enacting of laws. Those laws are
what will create and shape our culture in the future. No longer can we be
distant from the political scene of our day. These men and women all have an agenda;
it is up to us as voting citizens to put in power those who affect our culture
by enacting or preserving laws that are pleasing to God.
