Does God orchestrate every tragedy,
determine every death, and send every adverse weather pattern? Is he the author
of all that happens here on the earth? A common teaching about the sovereignty
of our God that is often used when trying to answer these questions will position
Christ in the driver’s seat of our lives with us as passengers. This sounds
great because it relieves us of any responsibility in life’s events, but the
scriptures paint an image of each one of us steering our own lives. This is
because God created us with free will. We should take directions from the Master, but he doesn’t control the outcomes of our actions.[1]
’The process works kind of like a GPS. It can provide the directions and, if
voice activated, it can even direct us verbally. However, it is ultimately up
to us whether we follow those directions or not.
