Richard Shropshire said "A rock concert is structured to cause an emotional reaction in
order to get us to like the group or to buy the group’s recordings or to buy
tickets for the next concert. A political rally is intended to stir our emotions
to get us to vote and support a particular candidate. Emotions are powerful,
but fickle and temporary reactions to a particular event. However, the walk of
Christian discipleship is more about an act of one’s will – a choosing to put
one spiritual foot forward at a time. Are there attendant emotions? Sometimes!
Even often! But those emotions are not to be the driving force that propels one
towards Christ-likeness. When the emphasis is on one’s emotions, the
desired effect will probably not last. Fireworks are fun, but they don’t win
wars."
Church to many is nothing more than an inoculating experience. It
is no different than the Catholics who sin all week and feel better after mass.
Might I dare say, it's becoming similar to the drug addict who needs his fix to
make it another day. They're not looking for a lifestyle change, but a dulling
of the pain for a few moments. Then, after they feel they are not as bad as
their conscience has been telling them; they feel free to go and live their
selfish way. If the pastors as a whole would take the stand that is needed in
this hour, and cut out the fluff and puff of psychological babble wrapped in a
scripture here and there, then the church culture will change. Ministers must
lead the charge. Like the drug addict, the church feels that it needs the very
thing that is killing it. This flesh appeasing message that is being espoused
today is being breathlessly chased by the masses of the church. However, it is
the very thing that is destroying it's spiritual power, eternal future, and the
energetic witnessing to the lost. As it has been said "People don't mind
spirituality as long as its divorced from authority."
