Don't chase what may destroy you

Richard Shropshire said "A rock concert is structured to cause an emotional reaction in order to get us to like the group or to buy the group’s recordings or to buy tickets for the next concert. A political rally is intended to stir our emotions to get us to vote and support a particular candidate. Emotions are powerful, but fickle and temporary reactions to a particular event. However, the walk of Christian discipleship is more about an act of one’s will – a choosing to put one spiritual foot forward at a time. Are there attendant emotions? Sometimes! Even often! But those emotions are not to be the driving force that propels one towards Christ-likeness. When the emphasis is on one’s emotions, the desired effect will probably not last. Fireworks are fun, but they don’t win wars."

Church to many is nothing more than an inoculating experience. It is no different than the Catholics who sin all week and feel better after mass. Might I dare say, it's becoming similar to the drug addict who needs his fix to make it another day. They're not looking for a lifestyle change, but a dulling of the pain for a few moments. Then, after they feel they are not as bad as their conscience has been telling them; they feel free to go and live their selfish way. If the pastors as a whole would take the stand that is needed in this hour, and cut out the fluff and puff of psychological babble wrapped in a scripture here and there, then the church culture will change. Ministers must lead the charge. Like the drug addict, the church feels that it needs the very thing that is killing it. This flesh appeasing message that is being espoused today is being breathlessly chased by the masses of the church. However, it is the very thing that is destroying it's spiritual power, eternal future, and the energetic witnessing to the lost. As it has been said "People don't mind spirituality as long as its divorced from authority."

Getting What You Want?

People often believe that success is getting what you want. However, wanting what you got after you get it should be more of an indicator of success. For example, if a guy invests all of his time, money, and effort, in winning the heart of a girl, only to realize after he gets her that she makes him miserable. He got what he wanted but he didn’t want what he got!

Biblical examples are abundant. The prodigal son believed that dishonoring his father was worth the achievement of receiving one third of the inheritance before the appropriate time. His view of success was getting the money and doing what he wanted to do with it. Later, he realized he got what he wanted but didn’t want what he got.

Judas would be a prime example of this. He plotted, schemed, and risked it all, to fulfill his getting of the 30 pieces of silver. Judas thought personal success was in personal wealth only to fatefully realize that after he got what he wanted, he didn’t want what he got.

We must be careful in what we want. This is why it is so important for the Word of God to absorb into our hearts. We will then desire what he desires, want what he wants, do what he says to do. Happiness will become the perfume and fragrance of our obedience according to Jesus when he announced the Beatitudes. Obedience achieves the goals God has for us – that my friend is true success!
