What is a biblical “peacemaker?”
Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Today’s definition seems to be anyone who will go
with the flow and not stir the pot so to speak. Phrases like “let’s just find
what we agree on” and then ignore the disagreements appear to be what we have
settled as being a peacemaker. However, people who have truly made a difference
in the past are not that kind of people. Scriptural characters such as Moses, Elijah,
Jeremiah, Paul, John, and the Reformers, have exhibited something quite
different than how we define it today. They would not keep quiet when biblical
principles were being violated just to keep a superficial peace. These people
would take every step necessary to ensure that truth would prevail and God’s
character not be tarnished. Biblical men of renowned and those who displayed
similar traits as they did, knew one thing about peace: there would be no peace
where error and false doctrine are present.
May we learn that today in the church. It seems
as though we have sacrificed every holy doctrine to keep people happy and a smile
on their face. Somehow, we have deceived ourselves into thinking that this is
being a peacemaker. True peace is achieved through the establishment of truth,
and knowing it is worth the sacrifice of popular opinion for God’s order to be
maintained.
